Frank Bartleman was an eyewitness in the Azusa Street revival at the turn of the twentieth century. This is his most popular book, initially titled "How Pentecost Came to Los Angeles", but was more recently renamed simply "Azusa Street." Azusa Street How Pentecost Came to Los Angeles edition by Frank Bartleman Religion Spirituality eBooks

This book is the story of the beginnings of the Pentecostal movement from the 1906 revival at Azusa Street. I grew up in the Assemblies of God and I often heard stories about the great revival and how God poured out His Spirit upon the saints of God who were praying and worshiping Him at Azusa Street. There you could find both black, white, and Hispanic saints worshiping the Lord, longing for His presence in their lives.

This book will stir you to prayer. Frank Bartleman strikes me as a man of great prayer. His warnings (sadly) are not being heard today by many in the Pentecostal church. Bartleman warns that prayer is the catalyst for Pentecost and for a true revival. He warns that the blessing of Pentecost must be maintained by prayer and by serious study of the Word of God. Bartleman feared that people would begin to worship the Holy Spirit above the Lord Jesus and would begin to see the blessing of Pentecost and the not the Blessed One who gives us Pentecost. He feared that the gifts of the Spirit would take precedence over the Giver of the gifts.

I pray that many will read this book and learn once again that Pentecost does not point us to fanaticism. When the Spirit comes, He glorifies Jesus (John 16:14). As A.W. Tozer wrote, "We don't need to pray for the Spirit to come. We need to worship Jesus and this is His coming!" The Spirit glorifies the Lord Jesus and points sinners to Him (John 16:8-11). We need a fresh Pentecost but I pray that we would read Bartleman and heed his warnings while learning from his earnest zeal and prayer life.

Bro. Seymour and the Azusa St. Revival were an incredible outpouring of the power of God. As I read this testimony of events, I see we are about to enter into this place 100 years later. It was prophesied and I cannot wait, my heart is filled with anticipation of God moving in this hour but with an understanding of "the price to pay."
You will be encouraged and excited as you read this.
If you want to take a trip back to the time of revival and awesome glory of God, this is going to be your transport. I love the stories and the fantastic healing and supernatural joy that only God can provide. The Shakanah Glory is infectious even in print. Love it and share the stories w/ others.
The true story of the great outpouring of the Holy Spirit and revival around 1904. Written from the diary of one of the leaders of the Azusa Street revival. If you're a Christian and want to read a first hand account, from a witness who was there, on how to have a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ like the Christians had on the day of Pentecost in the New Testament, you will love this profound account of God working in modern times to give all who have ears to hear, everlasting life.
This book is not measured for merit because of style or format but because of the report on the empowerment of the Holy Spirit in the lives of those faith giants that were on the scene in the early 1900's. The work of the Holy Spirit is of course, 'five stars' but we give the book 'four' to acknowledge the faithful work and sacrifice of Bartleman and others was as good as it gets for mere men. We should have every encouragement that the Holy Spirit will be here for us in 2014-15 when the fire will again purify the Church of our Lord Jesus Christ as those standing on the wall as watchmen will be ready to make the call.
THis book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the outpouring of God's spirit in the early 1900's. It sheds more light on the happenings at Azuza Street as well as the pitfalls of movements when man gets involved. It is surely a lesson for us today as we pray for revival once more and realize that, as the author pointed out at the end of the work, the church has not yet been fully restored to the New Testament power as in the early days. If you are interested in the Pentecostal power and revival sent only by Christ and his Spirit, it is a must-read. Read, meditate on it, get a burden!
What I liked most about this book is the eyewitness accounts of the power of God at work. First, Mr. Bartleman was able to convey a part of God that many of us do not know exists. He learned and new God's voice and obeyed even under pressure from fellow preachers or his own fear or exhaustion. Second, he has substantiated for me that the more souls one wins for Christ, the more the devil is provoked to stop you. For Mr. Bartleman, the devil tried to stop him through the near death of himself and his family members with dire sicknesses. His persistent trust in God always gave him the victory. Finally, the most obvious reason for the book, the Pentecostal Fire of the Holy Spirit. It was amazing to know that the will of God was being done by the power of the Holy Spirit unhindered, which is saving souls. We must decrease so that He will increase. The fact kept being stressed that pentecost or the Asuza movement would stop or be hindered due to the organizing of religion or sects. I ask myself, Is God pleased with church today? I want to listen for His leading in my life to ensure that His will is always done.
I have bought this book twice. Once about 15 years ago and i held on to it for years. But, as you know, a book that you love, you read it over and over and over. So, my book eventually lost its cover and i had the brilliant idea to purchase another. This book is beyond words. Frank Bartleman is such a descriptive writer without over using descriptions, but yet he does such a fantastic job that you feel like you are there-during the Azuza Street Revival. I have a library of alot of Christian books, hundreds of them. Azuza Street is in the Top 2 and i cannot even think what would be Number 1, but i do know, that it is No. 1 or No. 2 in the Fortune 500 of Christian books!!! A Classic!!!!
